Total 10 Teams will be participating in this Copa America 2021. It will be held in Argentina & Colombia. Brazil are the defending champions – 2019 Copa America. Chile is the two time champions having won the 2015 – 2016 editions of the tournaments. Qatar and Australia are the invited teams of the competitions but it’s cancelled because of Covid 19 pandemic. The Winner of the tournament will earn the rights to compete for the 2021 Fifa Confederations Cup.
All the 10 Teams will be divided into two groups – A & B
Group A [South Zone] will consists of the following 5 teams which also consists of Host country Brazil.
Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay, Chile & Paraguay
Group B [North Zone] consists of the following 5 teams which is having one Asian nation Qatar specially invited.
Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador & Peru
At the CONMEBOL Council meeting held on November 2018, it was decided that Fifa Ranking would be the basis to determine the seeds and the distribution of the rest of teams in the pots of the draw. This decision will also be valid for future editions of the Copa America.
For the draw the teams were allocated to four pots based on the Fifa World Ranking of December 2018 .
The match schedule was announced on February 2021. The winners and runners-up of each group and the two best third-placed teams among all groups advance to the quarter-finals.
Eight of the Conmebol nations have won the tournament atleast once in its 45 stagings since the inauguration of the game in 1916. The only exception to this is Ecuador and Venezuela who are yet to win.
Uruguay is the most favourite team with maximum wins 15 times and the current champions Chile has won for two times in 2015 and 2016. US is a non Conmebol country who have hosted the event in 2016. The highest finishing member of Conmebol has right to participate in next FIFA Confederations Cup however they are not obliged to do so whatsoever may be.
